In Norse mythology, four stags or harts (male red deer) eat among the branches of the World Tree Yggdrasill. According to the Poetic Edda, the stags crane their necks upward to chomp at the branches. Their names are given as Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Duraþrór.
The Red Deer is associated with the healing touch and the resurrection of the spirit. It is the messenger between our world and the otherworld and is considered a protective entity.. just as the four stags of the World Tree both eat of it and defend it.
